You're Allowed to Hide in the Bathroom
It's happened again.
You're touched out. You're overwhelmed. The noise is too much.
So you escape to the only place with a lock: the bathroom.
And then you feel guilty.
Let me tell you something: that's not weakness. That's self-awareness.
The Sacred Bathroom Break
Every mom knows this move.
Sit on the toilet (lid closed). Scroll your phone. Breathe. Wait for your nervous system to reset.
It's not ideal. But it's functional.
Why You Need This
You are a human with limits.
When those limits are hit—when you're overstimulated, overtouched, overwhelmed—you need to step away before you explode.
Taking 5 minutes to regulate is better than losing your temper and having to repair later.
Make It Official
Instead of sneaking away guiltily:
- Tell them: "Mommy needs 5 minutes alone. I'll be back."
- Set a timer if needed
- Use it unapologetically
You're not abandoning them. You're modeling self-regulation.
What to Do in There
- Breathe deeply
- Splash water on your face
- Do nothing at all
- Cry if you need to (that's allowed too)
Whatever helps you come back calmer.
The Real Message
Taking breaks doesn't make you a bad mom.
It makes you a human who's paying attention to her own needs.
And that's something to be proud of.
