When Being the Referee Breaks You
You've broken up the same fight seven times today.
Your patience is gone. Your voice is hoarse. Your soul is tired.
I know this feeling. And I want you to know: you're not failing.
The Weight of Refereeing
When kids fight constantly, it takes a toll:
- Emotional exhaustion from the tension
- Physical exhaustion from intervening
- Mental exhaustion from trying to be fair
You're not overreacting if this feels HARD. It IS hard.
Permission to Tap Out
Here's something radical:
You don't have to solve every fight.
If no one's getting hurt, you're allowed to:
- Walk away
- Say "Figure it out"
- Put them in separate spaces without investigation
- Protect YOUR mental health
The Separate Spaces Strategy
When it's too much:
"You two need to play in separate rooms for a while. I need a break from the fighting."
No guilt. No elaborate explanation.
Your nervous system matters.
The Self-Compassion Moment
Parenting multiple kids is HARD.
You're not supposed to be superhuman. You're not supposed to have infinite patience.
You're allowed to be depleted. You're allowed to need a break.
For This Evening
After they're asleep:
- Do something that fills your cup
- Don't think about the fights
- Remind yourself tomorrow is new
You're doing so much. Be gentle with yourself.
