The Kindness Jar (A Simple Family Experiment)
Here's a simple family experiment that actually works:
Stop trying to catch kids being bad. Start catching them being kind.
The Kindness Jar
Concept:
- Get a jar (any container works)
- When you notice an act of kindness, drop in a token (pom pom, marble, pasta piece)
- When it's full, everyone celebrates
That's it.
Why It Works
It shifts attention.
Instead of focusing on:
- What went wrong
- Who hit who
- Mistakes and misbehavior
You're looking for:
- Sharing without being asked
- Kind words
- Helping each other
What you look for, you find more of.
The Implementation
Start small:
- "I saw you share that with your sister. That's a pom pom!"
- "You helped carry the groceries. Another one!"
- "You checked if your brother was okay. In the jar!"
Be specific. Name the action.
The Celebration
When the jar fills up:
- Pizza night
- Movie marathon
- Trip to the park
- Dance party
Make it something EVERYONE enjoys, as a team reward.
The Reality Check
Will this fix sibling fighting? No.
Will it create more awareness of kindness? Absolutely.
Over time, kids start looking for ways to fill the jar. Kindness becomes a habit.
