Planting Seeds (The Easy Version)
Earth Week means planting, right?
Before you panic about elaborate garden setups:
A seed in a cup is enough.
The Simplest Version
You need:
- Plastic cup or yogurt container
- Dirt (from outside or bagged)
- Seeds (beans work great)
- Water
You do:
- Fill with dirt
- Poke seed in
- Water
- Wait
That's gardening. You're doing it.
Why Beans Are Best
Bean seeds:
- Are big (easy for little hands)
- Germinate fast (days, not weeks)
- Show visible progress
- Are cheap and available
Kids see results quickly = sustained interest.
The Learning
Even with just one cup:
- Kids witness growth cycle
- They practice patience
- They take responsibility (watering)
- They connect cause and effect
You don't need a farm to learn about nature.
Keeping It Real
Will your plant probably die at some point? Possibly.
Will your kid forget to water it? Probably.
That's okay. The planting is the experience.
Lower the bar. A sprouted seed is a win, even if it doesn't become a tomato plant.
