Why Boredom Matters (Especially This Week)
Here's a little trick from creativity research:
Boredom is the gateway to imagination.
If Screen-Free Week is creating boredom, that's not a problem to solve—it's the magic happening.
What Screens Prevent
When a screen is always available:
- There's never nothing to do
- Boredom never sets in
- Imagination never has to activate
The brain is constantly stimulated but not creating.
What Happens in Boredom
When a child is bored AND no screen is available:
- Discomfort (this is normal)
- Complaining ("I'm boooored")
- Waiting (don't rescue them)
- Dabbling (start fiddling with something)
- Engaging (suddenly interested in an activity)
- Deep play (lost in imagination)
Most parents stop at step 3 and provide entertainment.
The Screen-Free Difference
This week, try waiting longer at step 3.
Let them sit with boredom (assuming they're safe).
Watch what they create.
The Trust
Trust that your child's brain knows how to fill emptiness.
It just hasn't had to in a long time.
Give it room. Watch what emerges.
