Mother's Day is Coming (Tell Them What You Need)
Here's a little trick from relationship psychology:
Clearly stated expectations lead to better outcomes than hoped-for mind-reading.
With Mother's Day approaching, let's apply this.
The Mind-Reading Trap
Common pattern:
- You have specific wishes for Mother's Day
- You don't communicate them clearly
- Partner/kids do something else
- You feel disappointed/hurt
- They feel confused/frustrated
Everyone loses.
Why We Don't Ask
We resist asking because:
- "It should be obvious"
- "If I have to ask, it doesn't count"
- "They should just KNOW"
But psychology shows: people can't read minds.
And love shown the way we asked for is still love.
How to Ask Clearly
Try this approach:
"For Mother's Day, what would really make me happy is [specific thing]."
Examples:
- "...two hours completely alone"
- "...breakfast made by the family"
- "...a walk just with the kids"
- "...everyone doing their own thing while I read"
Be specific. Be direct.
Remove Shame
Asking isn't shameful. It's efficient.
You're setting everyone up for success.
They WANT to make you happy. Help them know how.
