Mother's Day Gift: Ask for Help

Friday, May 8, 2026
By Barnaby

Here's a radical Mother's Day idea: Ask for help.

What You Actually Need

Not flowers (though nice). Not brunch (though yummy).

Maybe what you need is:

  • Someone else to handle bedtime tonight
  • An hour to yourself tomorrow
  • Help with something you've been carrying alone

How to Ask

Be direct: "For Mother's Day, what would help me most is if you could [specific task] this week."

Examples:

  • "...take the kids Saturday morning so I can sleep"
  • "...handle dinner three nights this week"
  • "...give me one hour of quiet daily"

The Follow-Through

When they agree:

  • Don't hover while they do it
  • Accept "different, not wrong"
  • Actually USE the time for yourself

The Real Gift

The gift isn't the flowers or card.

The gift is feeling SUPPORTED.

Help them give you that gift by telling them how.
